What is an Amethyst Gemstone?

What is an Amethyst Gemstone?Amethyst is a type of quartz, which is usually found as a clear stone. Amethyst is a violet/purple color which is thanks to the irradiation of the iron in its composition.

The name of this stone comes from the Greek word “amethystos” which means “not drunk(en). It was given then name as, funnily enough, the Greeks believed that amethyst was a cure or preventative for drunkenness. Although we know this not to be true in a physical/medical sense, that doesn’t mean that amethyst would not suit the personality of a merrymaker!

Like most gemstones, amethyst can vary in color, in this case from a lighter violet to a deep purple. Amethyst is found in good quality and quantity in several places, including Russia, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and other places in the far East.

Amethyst has been used throughout the ages by the Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and others. There are several examples of amulets (some carved and some rougher in shape) that can still be seen today.

Amethyst finds its way into a number of different types of jewelry, including earrings, pendants and necklaces, as well as bangles/bracelets and most commonly rings. Make sure you take a look at the collection of amethyst jewelry available on the system to see what you like.
